As the weather starts to change and it gets colder.. you might struggle with motivation to get outside and wonder “what should I wear on my runs?”
I don’t live in the freezing cold weather like Minnesota or Wisconsin. I live in the PNW, where it does get cold and we do get snow but it’s manageable. I want to share all my favorite winter running wear and tips with you. These items have gotten me through training the last 4 years.
Remember: when it comes to running in the winter, your motivation will be low but you will feel 100% better after a run! So… layer up, get outside, breath fresh air, and enjoy the miles!!
Do not skip the warm-up! I like to do a warm-up in the house before I put my “outside” layer on. This get my heart rate up, blood pumping then I’m nice an toasty and ready to head outside. Once I’m all layered up, I’ll do a brisk walk for 5 minutes(about 0.25) and take deep breaths allowing my lungs to condition to the cold air.
Ok… now for allll the layers!
- Head Band/Hat– I wear Women’s UA Run ColdGear® Reactor Headband that has a reflective strip, it’s washable (I still sweat in the cold) and comfortable for wearing a ponytail. I got this for my first half marathon back in 2013 and still wear it! Avoid a cotton head band as this will just soak up the sweat and leave your head wet & freezing. If your head tends to get cold, a fleece hat from Amazon would keep you warmer.
- Other Items– Sunglasses: I LOVE Knockaround’s and wear them year round! A bandanna or neck gaiter is nice to have to cover your face & neck if it’s snowing or freezing rain.
- Base Layer-I wear 32 Degree Ladies’ Heat Tee and 32 Degree Ladies’ Heat Pant both found at Costco. I’ve had my “base layers” for a couple of winter seasons and they have held up well. Usually, Costco will put this brand on sale every fall and they’re really cheap. You want the base layer to be snug fitting so it doesn’t move around and cause chaffing, also because the snug fit will help keep you warmer. It’s important to keep your “core” warm when running. Your legs & arms will be moving and will stay warmer with all the blood flowing. I only use base layer for extra cold days. I usually don’t wear multiple layers unless it’s in the 20’s (but that’s just me, it might be different for you). These base layers also come in handy for skiing or just playing in the snow. Grab a pair the next time you’re at Costco!
- Second Layer– Here’s where it can get tricky depending on the temperature/weather how many layers you need. I tend to “run hot” and don’t require many layers (even in the freezing cold). My favorite running jacket is the Nike Women’s Pacer Top Half Zip. During the fall and winter I run in this a lot! Depending on how cold it is, I’ll wear a tank, T-shirt or long sleeve tee under it.
- Outside Layer/Coat– If the elements are bad, rain/snow, I’ll wear jacket over my base layer (sometimes 2nd layer). I have a J.CARP Women’s Packable Windbreaker Jacket, Super Lightweight and Visible, Outdoor Active Cycling Running Skin Coat from Amazon that I’ve ran in it 3 years and it’s worked well for me. The one thing I like about this jacket is you can zip off the sleeves and wear it as vest. I’m currently looking to upgrade my running coat to a better quality one with a hood. Let me know in the comments if you have one you love!
- Running Pants– Ha! The temperature has to be in the 30s, or below, before I feel I need to wear pants instead of shorts when running. I’ve found women usually have a brand they LOVE and swear they’re the best. Well, I love Skechers Women’s Walk Go Flex High Waisted 2-Pocket Yoga Legging. I got mine from Costco several years ago and I’m still in love with them. These leggings are thicker and I have only had to wear leggings underneath a few times. I love that they’re high waisted and have pockets on the side.
- Socks– Go and a head and pay the $$$ you NEED good socks! I like Smartwool PhD Run Cold Weather Mid Crew Socks from REI. Smartwool socks are they way to go, no question.
- Yaktrax– If you’re in area that gets snow and you plan on running outdoors… you’ll want to get a pair of Yaktrax at Costco or REI.
- Gloves– I have two pairs of HEAD women’s running gloves from Costco. These are by far my favorite! I couldn’t find the women’s gloves online at Costco but here is the men’s to get an idea of what they look like. HEAD Men’s Ultrafit Touchscreen Running Gloves, Gray
- Reflective Gear/Lights– If you’re running in the winter, chances are it will be dark. Stay safe, stay visible. Head lamp, reflective vest, glow sticks or flashing lights make sure cars can see you and you can safely run and see the road/trail.
